Sometimes you can do the work without the help of professional plumbing services. Here is a short list of ways to clean a drain or toilet and an explanation of what they are and how they should be used. If you have any more questions you should contact Cleveland Plumbing. They will be happy to answer any more questions you may have about each method.

Plunger: you most likely have a plunger in your home and have used it before. They are very common to clear blockages in toilets, sinks and tubs. They are very easy to use. All you must do is place the plunger over the drain that is clogged and use some force to push it up and down. This will force air down the pipe that will then push the clog out of the way. A combination plunger has two cups and is usually black. These are by far the best choice when trying to clear out toilets.

Auger: this type of tool is also known as a plumbers snake. This is usually a fairly long tool that has a coiled head on it. You will simply place it in the clogged drain and crank the handle so that the coil spins down the drain. It will either push the clog to a larger part of the drain or it will grab the clog and you can easily pull it back out. Most residential plumbers use an electrical version of this. It is recommended that an electrical version should only be used by a professional because if not used correctly it can damage your pipes.

Closet Auger: this is also known as a toilet auger. This tool is very similar to the regular auger, but is generally only used on toilets because they are more rigid. They look almost the exact same except the handle is covered with a rubber sleeve so that it does not damage the porcelain.

Sewer Tape: this tool is very similar to an auger, but is not very effective on difficult blockages. This is simply a long flat metal band that has a hook on one end that is used to pull out the blockage.

Chemicals: most people have used a chemical drain cleaner at one point or another. They are available in almost any store and come in a variety of styles. These chemicals work because they are heavier than water. They will sink into the drain and due to the chemical reactions will disintegrate the blockage. These mixtures are usually somewhat dangerous and should be handled with care. You should wear rubber gloves, and protective eye wear when handling. They are simple to use because all you must do is pour it directly down the drain and wait a few minutes.
